Len Cooper is ample proof that every American Black man's story is not the same. He has been a boy in brutal segregated Alabama and an invisible homeless man in the nation's capital. He sought holiness and comfort, entering a monastery to become a priest at a time when the Catholic Church was in denial about racism, homosexuality and robed predators. Still, Cooper rises to become a writer and a world traveler who finds solace and "home" in a land that is supposed to be foreign. Israel.

The Children of My Knee eBook Len Cooper Parry Dale Patrice Gaines Yvonne ShinhosterLamb

This book is truly amazing. I am by no means a non-fiction reader. I get some recommended to me and I usually have to force myself to read them and it takes forever. Len's story was nothing like that. From the moment I started it, I couldn't put it down. It caused some issues at work since I was staying up all hours of the night reading, well worth it. The story brings you in and puts you right next to Len and his brothers while dealing with Alabama life. After reading this book I realize I lead a very sheltered life and I for one am thankful that my eyes have been opened to a great many things. I told the author himself, that his book has changed me in ways I have yet to discover. The biggest message I took away from this story was love and forgiveness. At times I was laughing out loud and grinning ear to ear, and at others, I was wiping tears of sadness and disbelief from my eyes as I learned about the struggles Len endured and the evil that exists in the world. By now I have told hundreds about this book, pretty much anyone I meet or come across I've invited to read it. I have never written a book review before, but this book is well worthy of your consideration. I hope you find the time to read it and learn from the most interesting men I have ever had the honor of meeting.

The Children of My Knee eBook Len Cooper Parry Dale Patrice Gaines Yvonne ShinhosterLamb Reviews

Although I have not seen Len for some time, I worked closely with him in Italy, and I consider him a friend and truly one of the best people I know. Over the course of many long talks about life and its many ups and downs, Len told me some of these stories. I always felt that his truly amazing life story would make an excellent book and I always found the experiences he related fascinating. Reading this book though placed the stories in the larger context of his life and the manner in which they were told took my on an emotional roller coaster. Suddenly, the stories told so easily to me in our office became so real. Len, you are amazing and this book is truly one of the best books I have ever read. Your life story is amazing, and I only wish I could have stayed in the unit longer to experience the true gift of your friendship. I recommended this book to my wife and mother's book club, as I feel the gritty and difficult history your life experiences relate should be read by as many as possible. I cannot wait to read your next book.

I read the Version of this book and I really enjoyed the read.
I have known Len Cooper since kindergarten and this book was an eye opener. He was always this sweet, innocent, quiet and respectful young man with those innocent eyes. Many things mentioned I remember happening in elementary, high school and college. It is thought-provoking to read his take on him being a black man born in racist Birmingham, Alabama. I also was amazed by his parent’s opposition to Martin Luther King and "The Movement". It is interesting how many of us in Birmingham, Alabama have their story about where they were that Sunday morning. Many were either on their way to church or Sunday school. This book was captivating and hard to put down. I could feel his pain as he moved from Birmingham to Italy and the many obstacles that got in his way. Len faced many struggles but through his perseverance he overcame them. He may have fallen down but he got up!!!

This is a great book and I would recommend it for high school students up!!!

I look forward to his next publication.
I have read the kindle version of this book and I decided I need the hard copy because this contemporary work needs the ability to underline and dissect.

From the story of the Church bombing in Alabama, to the press room in DC, to Gerico Israel you will be forever escorted by the narrator's piercing boy eyes. You, as a reader, follow the narrator to his mature age, but the constant companion are his little boy eyes.

This story has Literary value because it transcend ethnicity and nationality. It gives hope amidst the horrific episodes.

Many times as a youngster I always puzzled when contemporary Literature was only negativity and dark despair.

Len Cooper stripped himself down to the core, yet the light coming from his true innocent ten years old eyes kept shining through. This is the deep message I got.

It is a fast read; It is a story full of stories capable to linger with you for many days.

It would be a good book to give to young adults and high school readers because it speaks about life.
This was a remarkable book. We read it for my book club and I just cannot say enough about the courage it must have taken to put all these memories and emotions to paper. I was moved again and again, by his recollections and hardships, and heartbroken for his experiences of being black in supposedly "equal rights" America (writing as a woman who has different equality challenges). Kudos to the author for never giving up on his life and what was important to him, and his stories will stay in my memory for a very long time. May I also have the courage and fortitude to not give up, and the bravery to share my life and experiences. Thank you, Mr. Cooper!
I am so grateful to have read this book and consider it an honor! You see, although I am an educated woman in my mid fifties and have read historical accounts of racism, I never truly understood it in such depth.
I am not and have never been prejudiced. I was, however, somewhat ignorant of what other races and cultures endure even today. I can't imagine a world where a school or church is considered black or white; and my heart ached when I read about the police stopping Mr. Cooper based on the color of his skin. In addition, his treatment while in seminary was and is reprehensible! Please know, Mr. Cooper, that is not representative of God who loves you and yearns for your return to seeking Him.
This book is very well written and though I got it for free on my kindle fire, I'd have definitely bought and paid for it. It is rich in substance and makes the time period come alive. I did not want to see it end and would highly recommend this book!
